SEC did just renegotiate if Im not mistaken. Also you do realize the BIG has made the most money for awhile with their TV contracts. Also the big noon kickoff on fox did better then any other show including game day with their prime time slots this past year as the article stated. Your way underselling the Midwest and their passion for college football and this new contract will prove just that. That's why the BIG TV contracts have never taken a back seat to anyone. And trust me it's not just because of Columbus.SEC will renegotiate. The only TV market in BIG 10 country in the top 25 for college football viewership is Columbus Ohio. The other 24 are in the SEC / ACC footprint.
As much as people outside the SE would like to pretend otherwise there is almost no interest in College football outside of the SEC/ACC footprint and much of the ACC footprint has no interest either.
Also heard a conversation with the journalist who wrote the article and the number is closer to $800 million than it is to a billion. Still a lot of money but the magic number of a billion is, according the writer, a pretty big stretch. Not undoable but unlikely UNLESS it is a streaming deal. In that case who's gonna watch it? Streaming is great if you live out of market but most people still watch football on a TV connected to a cable or even an antennae...and they will for many years to come.
