For many believers this is the missing piece of the puzzle.

"For those concerned that excessive grace teaching will lead to an increase in sin, they have missed the dart board completely. What is it that causes sin to increase? You probably didn’t catch this in Sunday school class: “Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:20-21).
Notice how it is the through the law that sin increases, yet grace reigns through righteousness. Wait a minute! Stop the presses! The law and commandments that came through Moses would increase sin? It may come as a shock, but that was its purpose. This is another reason why we know it is not the law and commandments from the first covenant written on our hearts today. If this were true, then God would’ve clashed with himself because the purpose of the old law was meant to increase the trespass and bring a reminder of sins.

Yet in the New Covenant, sins were taken away and God remembers them no more. Recognizing that God did not give the law to Israel to make them worthy and acceptable of eternal life is a vital component on the road to realigning our thinking correctly with the current covenant of Jesus Christ.

The law was not designed to aid people towards living an improved moral lifestyle, but rather it was given to show them they could not perform up to the required standard it demanded. In other words, it was designed to fail. The Jews did not understand this, and many Christians have also missed the purpose of the Mosaic law. "
