Dog Snake Bite?

I’m worried my dog may have been bitten by a snake. Do y’all think they are still out? I was at our farm near Waynesboro. It was about 60 degrees this morning so I’m thinking it’s possible.

Guy killed a rattlesnake up here in WV in December at 60 degrees, guaranteed they are out there.

Get the collar off, look for swelling and/or punctures, call the vet also.

Give it some benadryl as well.

How big a dog?

See any swelling?

At the vet. They think it’s an allergic reaction which is what I thought it was at first. The bumps below made me a little concerned it could have been a snake. I think he got into some ants or yellow jackets.

You know it is OK to give dogs childrens Benadryl. That will counter some of the reactions till you get to a vet. Keep it around just in case I get a reaction to something.

We gave him 50mg and it worked well. Once it started working, I was less concerned about it being a snake bite.

Vet said Benadryl was the right thing to do when we saw the reaction. 1mg per pound is the dosage.

Unless it's below freezing, you can encounter snakes. Even if it's 30 in the morning and 55 in the afternoon, they will come out and catch some sun.

Can be really bad tempered when they are out on a cool day too.

Yep. I picked up a king snake once on my way to the stand on a below freezing morning. He was coiled up and had frost on him. I stuck him in my coat pocket. When he thawed out and warmed up he was a bit grouchy about the kidnapping.

Mines been bit twice, copperhead first then a canebreak. Copperhead just caused minor swelling around her face where she was bit, gave her antibiotics and some pain pills. Canebreak got her leg, had her to the vet within 30 minutes and she was spiraling down fast. Anti-venom and a bill for that one. That to say you won’t have to guess if your dog gets bit by a rattlesnake. And yeah they crawl year round here.

Rattlesnake bite on a dog usually makes them bleed a little. There is a rattlesnake vaccine, I’ve heard both ways on it working, some say yeah some say ney. We use children’s Benadryl and pickling alum.
