Dry firing an AR15. Should you? Will it damage anything?

We dry fired M-16's in the Air Force all the time. The instructor would teach us how to tear it down and when we put it back together, the whole class would dry fire their weapon several times. These weapons were subjected to this repeatedly by the whole base and I never saw one break.
