Has anyone been doing anything in the surf around st Simon’s or Jeckyll or is it still too cold? Piers? Causeways? Thanks

I haven't been because water temperature is still to cold at about 62 degrees. (Tybee Island)

Give it two-three more weeks when the water temp hits 65 degrees and rising. Then its time to surf fish the GA coast. The big female Whiting are usually the first eating fish to show up in the wash and the smaller males after that.

Then everything worth catching starts to show up in the surf when the water temps approach 70 degrees and upward.

After it hits 80 degrees give it up until fall unless your into sharks, rays, and maybe Spanish Mackerel.

Last year near end of April at Tybee Island, everybody was catching whiting, croakers and a few bonnet sharks and small rays. Some did very well on the whiting. Most used shrimp.

I fished the surf at Tybee last weekend. Fatback is correct, water temp is still a touch chilly. Bite was slow, a mix of small whiting and bluefish. I did catch 5 whiting big enough for the fryer - 3 females with eggs and 2 males. Using freshly dead shrimp and crab flavored fishbites on pompano rigs.

Pretty much got skunked in Jacksonville on Saturday. Muddy and rough water with the NE breeze. 1 black drum, 1 small jack, a bunch of catfish. Fished the incoming tide at Tybee yesterday evening and did significantly better. In the last hour of the incoming we got about a dozen whiting, 1 pompano, 1 shark, a few bluefish, and hooked a giant stingray. Water is still chilly about 64/65, weather in the 70s this week and not much rain so the bite should get progressively better. Should be red hot in another week or so, hopefully we don't get much rain so the water clears up some more.

All right then, that's a good start to the season!

Yep', its time to surf fish! Should be good fishing, weather permitting, until mid-June or so.

What size was that Pompano?
