What happened? Back in the mid 70s in Avery County, just about every time I walked down to the Linville River from the cabin to fish I`d flush at least one grouse. They were plentiful all around that area.

More than likely they quit cutting.

This. The grouse habitat goes away and so do the grouse. Back then around 10 to 15% of national forest land was the prime age for grouse habitat. Now it less than 1.5%. You can still find grouse where the habitat is right. There’s just not much of it that is.

North Georgia mountains used to have a lot of grouse before the environmentalist stopped timber operations. Now you will be hard pressed to hear even one drumming in the spring and pretty hopeless hunting in fall and it did not take many years to get where they are now.
