Porting turkey gun?

RouDaddy

I am getting some work done on my Turkey gun, and am wondering if makes sense to get the barrel ported like I see some of the sporting clays guns done to reduce recoil.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Rou

IMHO, I wouldn't bother. It will not improve pattern, follow up shot speed, reduce felt recoil, etc,etc- no matter what the source tells you.

The only thing porting actually does is make the gun louder.

porting your gun helps to slow down the wadding so that it doesn't blow through the shot. If the wadding comes out too fast it goes through the shot and spreads out your pattern.

Briley Shotgun Porting
Guns Magazine, March, 2001
The name Briley is synonymous with high-quality shotgun modifications and accessories, specifically choke tubes. A recent addition to the company's offerings is the Briley Ultra Port, an EDM porting system for reducing recoil in shotgun barrels.
The ports, curiously configured in what we can best describe as a "comma pattern," are positioned closer at the muzzle and further apart as they move toward the receiver. Briley utilizes a single line of ports on each side of the barrel instead of a dual line. Test results using a fixture to measure muzzle rise showed a single line of ports to be the most efficient, The ports are angled rearward at about 30 degrees to increase the recoil reduction by pushing the barrel forward.
The design of the Briley Ultra Port was based on efficiency and cosmetics, according to Briley's Claudio Salassa. "We wanted to vent the gas effectively, but also get some kind of an exit hole that was good-looking and different from everyone else. We tested them against the other types of ports out there - Laser Ports, Pro Port, Angle Port -- and ours was equal in terms of muzzle rise, but the Ultra Port was cleaner than some of the other ports. The objective was to get the gas to go straight up rather than to the side, so you'll notice the ports are as high on the barrel as possible."
The ports are cut with an EDM, which results in perfectly clean holes without the burrs caused by conventional drilling or machining. The shape, officially described as "teardrop," is such that the ports stay very clean, with minimal carbon or fouling.
We found a Remington 870 noticeably less violent in recoil with the Briley Ultra Ports as compared to a stock 870. How much reduction is hard to measure subjectively, but we would estimate the muzzle rise and felt recoil were reduced by 25 percent. We hasten to add that the forcing cone had also been lengthened in the ported 870's barrel, which also helps in taming recoil.
Briley Ultra Ports cost $95 for a single barrel and $135 for an 0/U. While you're ordering, you might want to have a set of Briley chokes installed, too.

Other tests by unbiased groups (i.e. not trying to sell EDM porting) have shown porting NOT to reduce felt recoil.

Muzzle jump -yes . Recoil- No.

Their article was just easy to copy, paste and print, there are hundreds more showing it does help and I am sure there are others out there showing it doesn’t. What it all boils down to is personal preference. What you as a single individual likes, or not.

Porting can reduce perceived recoil, muzzle jump or rise as it is associated with recoil. I shoot thousands of rounds through shotguns, well I shot right at a thousand rounds last month alone shooting clays of some form. Porting has helped me with my guns, lengthening the forcing cones, overbore barrels (back boring some call it) proper fit is the biggest key. If you shotgun does not fit properly you could perceive more recoil, or muzzle jump.

Did you know that approximately 8% of the shotgun stocks made today actually fit someone, the other 92% need to see a gunsmith. Shooters definitely don't like recoil so now there is a problem, how does the major manufacturers of firearms deal with this simple problem, well one way would have been recall the shotguns that were mass produced and re-cut the chambers to proper length, at the time when this happened this would have been an almost impossible task so this was a quick fix for a bad rap on heavy recoil, stock redesign and proper chamber length. They knew at the time if you straighten out the stock there is less felt recoil with a bad fit gun for all shooters and if you have the proper chamber for the shells being fired in them the recoil is reduced combine these two items and you satisfy all the shooters on recoil issues. The firearms industry has never really went back to address the stock fit issue other than design stocks that will fit some people on the average height of 5'7" to about 5'10" and if you add a straight comb to the stock it will fit even a lesser amount of people hence you now have shotgun stocks that will somewhat fit about 8% of the shooting public. This is a shame because the average male height of most of the steady shell buying, gun loving shooting public is 6' tall on average and with so many women getting into the shooting sports they are shorter than 5'7". With all the improvements made to reduce recoil:
Gas operated semi-auto shotguns, recoil less.
Longer forcing cones, reduce recoil.
Recoil pads, reduce felt recoil.
Ported barrels, reduce recoil.
Yes once again you here people talking about this or that gun pounding them to the point they will sell that particular gun. The answer is all to obvious to those who know: (The stock just does not fit.)
A bad fit gun will simply pound you till you get one that fits or give up your sport. Evidence of people well beyond the manufacturers standard one stock fits all will swap, trade, buy more guns than you can shake a stick at trying to find one stock that will work for them.

I think agarr is right on this one. Just had my 870 Super Mag ported last week by Angle Port and the forcing cone lengthed. It still kickssssssssssssss like a MULE. Pattern has not changed either. I think we are just going to have to tough this one out. I know my sights are right and where my point of aim is. Just one shot at a time.

I don't think that there is much that you can do to soften the recoil of any gun shooting a 3 1/2" magnum load. Those things are designed to ring the family jewels!!!

Gun fit is the key, spend the money on getting the gun fitted to you the shooter. This will reduce the recoil of the gun, and how much better you will shoot it.

As for reducing the recoil of a 3 ½, 2 ¼ oz loaded shell, I don’t think it is going to happen. But do you really need that?

I think you do. It’s your gun, modify it like you want to, and shoot the shells you want to shoot.

OK what about all those screw in full to extra full chokes for the 870 with porting ----are the ports just for looks / selling points and don't really help reduce the recoil???

They do help reduce muzzle rise, and stripping the wad away from the shot. As for reducing the recoil of a 3 ½, 2 ¼ oz loaded shell, I don’t think it is going to happen. You can add recoil reducer to the stock to help soften some of the blow, a good recoil pad like an SVL, depending on the type of gun in question maybe add a weighted reducer to the forestock, lengthen the forcing cones. Still the simple physics of pushing a large mass down the barrel you will have recoil.

All of the things I have mentioned in this post are documented as to helping reduce recoil and muzzle rise of a shotgun. I shoot around 200 targets weekly; this is pushing far more shells through a gun than the average person. However I am not shooting 3 ½ shell with a 2 ¼ oz load.
