Hi everyone!

This Saturday (June 5) on The Tying Bench, in honor of the arrival of June (and of all the great insect activity that summer brings!) we'll tie a summer classic -- the Foam Spider! This easy-to-tie fly is a favorite among warmwater fly fishers. It's also a great trout fly when tied in smaller sizes.

But wait! There's more!

To go with that Foam Spider, we'll ALSO be tying the Quick and Easy Ant! This remarkably simple ant imitation is perfect for use as a dropper with your Foam Spider. Fish love 'em both -- and it's not unusual to pick up a double with a fish on each fly!

I hope you can join us! There is no cost to join in, and all are welcome!

Here's what you'll need to tie these two great flies:

For the Foam Spider:

HOOK: Size 8 or 10 dry fly hook. (You can go smaller, too, down to size 14 or so if you wish.)
THREAD: 3/0 or 210 denier thread (or strong 6/0 thread) to match color of body foam. (If you use smaller hooks, you'll want to go with smaller thread.)
BODY: Sheet of 2mm or 3mm closed-cell foam. I prefer 3mm foam for these flies because it adds flotation. Color? Try yellow, tan, orange, black, etc. -- your choice!
LEGS: Silicone or elastic leg material, your choice of color/pattern!
SIGHT SPOT MATERIAL: Bright (orange, yellow, chartreuse, etc.) egg yarn, or a strip cut from a bright sheet of closed-cell foam. Ideally, choose a sight spot color that's different from the body color.

Quick and Easy Ant Dropper:

HOOK: Size 12 or 14 1XL nymph hook
THREAD: Black 3/0 or 6/0
BODY: Black dubbing

Other materials and tools you'll need:
Craft scissors for cutting foam
Dubbing wax
