Someone leaked word that the Nationals organization was planning a ceremony to honor Stephen Strasburg's retirement announcement. Then, in an abrupt about-face, owner Mark Lerner issued a formal statement saying that the Nationals would not hold either a ceremony or news conference honoring Strasburg.
Apparently, someone took Strasburg's retirement announcement badly. Strasburg signed a 7-year $245 million contract back in 2020 and has only pitched 31 innings since, yet he has been paid $140 million for those 4 years (some of the $140 million has been deferred).
It should be noted that by retiring Strasburg is walking away from $105 million in guaranteed salary.
Not a Strasburg fan but I find it unusual that one of the National's greatest pitchers ever, is ending his career this way. More to come?
