The Stephen Strasburg Retirement Just Got Interesting

Someone leaked word that the Nationals organization was planning a ceremony to honor Stephen Strasburg's retirement announcement. Then, in an abrupt about-face, owner Mark Lerner issued a formal statement saying that the Nationals would not hold either a ceremony or news conference honoring Strasburg.

Apparently, someone took Strasburg's retirement announcement badly. Strasburg signed a 7-year $245 million contract back in 2020 and has only pitched 31 innings since, yet he has been paid $140 million for those 4 years (some of the $140 million has been deferred).

It should be noted that by retiring Strasburg is walking away from $105 million in guaranteed salary.

Not a Strasburg fan but I find it unusual that one of the National's greatest pitchers ever, is ending his career this way. More to come?

Yeah, that’s pretty interesting. Guy had HOF type stuff, just couldn’t stay healthy.

Our little small town had a couple of guys drafted in the last 10 years. Both were pitchers and both made it to AAA, where injuries derailed them. Both say the injuries take a toll after a while. Both physically and mentally. Both had to retire.

Those 2 made peanuts (minus a 1.2 mill signing bonus one received ), compared to Strasberg. Just saying, it would probably be tough to keep going after making $120 in your career.
