Tour Deer Habitat Exhibits at QDMA Headquarters, Athens

QDMA’s National Convention in Athens, Ga. is over, but the food plots and habitat improvements at our 23-acre National Headquarters site are still here. During Convention, we used the site for outdoor seminars by experts, and now we’d like to open it up for self-guided individual tours and guided group tours from now until hunting season.

Self-Guided Tours: Stop by the QDMA National Headquarters near Athens, Ga., during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and pick up a self-guided tour map at the front desk. No reservation is necessary for self-guided tours, but you must visit during business hours. If you're in or near Athens, stop by and see us!

Guided Tours: Organized groups of 10 or more can schedule a guided tour. Guided tours can be scheduled during or after business hours if desired, including weekends. There is no charge, but guided tour groups are strongly encouraged to support QDMA’s nonprofit mission by bringing new members to the organization. Group tours can include bonus instruction on topics like jawbone aging if desired. To schedule a guided tour, call Lindsay Thomas Jr. at 800-209-3337.

What You Can See:
--Several quality examples of warm-season food plot blends (see the attachment below). Some have been protected by deer-proof fencing and others not, so you can see the effects of browsing pressure in a high-density herd. Also see the effects of herbicides for warm-season weed control and compare treated and untreated sections. Learn how blends of legumes and grasses work well together to produce quality food plots.

--Hinge-cut demonstration area. This area includes deer bedding cover and techniques for manipulating deer movements for hunting success, all created by experts for seminars that were held at the National Convention.

--TREES: Grafted persimmon trees (improved persimmon variety grafted onto naturally occurring persimmon). Six-year-old hybrid oaks bearing acorns. Heavy-bearing improved pear tree. Other oaks, Dunstan chestnuts and soft-mast trees in tree-planting exhibits. Naturally occurring persimmon trees that have been “released” from surrounding competition to encourage growth and fruit production.

--Herbicide treatments for timber stand improvement, including hack-and-squirt and cut-and-treat.

--Mineral stations.

--QDMA Management Tools and Merchandise: While you’re here, you can purchase educational books, tools like jawbone extractors and harvest data record books, QDMA hats and apparel, educational posters, and more, while saving on shipping. Almost anything you see at our online store at www.QDMA.com can be purchased at the office.

Warning: Ticks are abundant at the Headquarters site, but you can see the entire tour without walking in brush. Stay on open ground, stay clear of undergrowth, and bring insect repellent. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for walking in the woods.
