What size slabs to order?

The guy I order rock from just dropped the price of his plain obsidian slabs to 10 cent/ sq " and I figure I should order a bunch to practice on. They're all 1/4" thick. I was just wondering if one size was better than another to learn on. Thanks in advance.

I don't think size matters ..... you can always get a glass cutter and cut it down , so I would say bigger is better ....

I feel slabs are harder to learn on than flakes but that is just me ....

1/4" slabs are mighty thin, for me atleast. When I started knapping I tried them and broke about everyone I worked. I would take a 8" piece and end up with a bird point. The only success I ever had with slabs is with ones 3/8 to 1/2 inch. Especialy with obsidian it is very brittle and dont like a whole lot of sidways pressure in the middle.JMHO:rolleyes:

go for it

as long as you are pressure flaking over grind then 1/4 in is perfect i would get big pcs and cut out preforms and start making points.

Get em bigger. I don`t really like em, but they do save money, and cut down on waste, on exotic stone.

I can't run a flake far enough yet to warrant buying slabs..... :banginghe
