Where Did It All Go?

On just about every episode of Star Trek and especially T.N.G. someone just walked over to the computer console and asked for something to eat or drink. What ever they asked for appeared on the pad in front of them in a glass for a drink or on a plate for food complete with silverware if needed. What happened to all the plates and stuff when they were finished with it? It appeared out of no where..from nothing, if they kept all of it they'd have sunk the Enterprise. Where did it go?

Into the grinder, and re-constituted as a corn starch-based tablet, that once irradiated by the dilitheum crystals that power the ship, can once again become a plate when a drop of water is added.

Geez. Can't believe you didn't know that.

Wonder what a computer generated cheeseburger and fries would taste like?

You can go get you one. The impossible meat is still widely available in grocery stores near you. Plenty of gluten free buns on the shelf, too.

All I can figure is that at a given amount of time they just degraded back into the atoms from which they were created. BUT, if that's it, then so would the food / drink that was created in them leaving the person that ate / drank just as unnourished as before.
