And so were my friends that night back in 1964. I was still in high school and working at my Stepdad's Amoco station that we ran for quite a few years. Two of my best friends were on duty there with me that night my Stepdad always hired people he knew and could trust to help us run the place especially during the summer months.
The other thread about gas pumps reminded me of what happened that shocked all three of us young teen-agers on that hot summers night so long ago.
A brand new Ford Thunderbird rolled up to one of our gas pumps we could see a young female was driving the car and traveling all by herself. She got out of her car and we could see that the young lady was a total knock out, she was a beautiful young woman. All three of us on duty jumped at the opportunity to be of service to this walking Angel before us. She needed gas one of us filled her gas tank while the other two checked under the hood of her car and washed the windshield. She visited our ladies room while we were checking her car out and of course keeping a look out for another look at her.
The young lady returned to her car walked inside the office and paid for her gas and thanked us for helping her, she was a very polite young woman. We watched as she walked back to her car got in then started the engine and drove away. We young boys looked at each other and said WOW, that girl was gorgeous hope she comes back soon. Well she did, suddenly she drove back to the service station stopped at the front door then got out and came back into the office where we were. I was sitting on the counter one of my friends was behind the cash register and the other one was sitting beside the glass plate window in a chair. That beautiful creature walked up, stood right in front of me and said. Would you like to go to Florida? For just a moment I was stunned into silence while my two friends sat there with their chins down and almost touching their chests.
The only thing I could think of to say was well, I have to go to school tomorrow so I can't go to Florida. Again she told me, well if you want to go get in that Thunderbird because that's where I am going tonight and you are welcome to come along with me. I again reluctantly told the young lady that I was sorry but I just couldn't go with her but I wished I could. She walked out of the office got into her car crossed the bridge over I-95 to the southbound on ramp and away she went. We never saw that girl again but we hoped to. I hope she made it to Florida safely but that I will never know. If I remember correctly her license tag on her car was from New Jersey.
For quite some time my friends told everyone they knew about what happened that night and that I was invited by a beautiful young lady for a trip to Florida in a brand new Thunderbird. My Mama would have killed me had I done so, or maybe someone on the road to Florida would have had I taken her up on her offer. Why that neatly dressed young woman picked me out to go to Florida with her and not one of my friends that night I will never know that either.
