Our day with the Holts

Thank you Mr. Vernon and Ms Billi for having Butch and I up for a visit. Enjoyed every moment of it and the lunch too. :) So good to see you again. :fine:

Folks, Mr. Vernon's Cartecay paradise outside of Ellijay, Georgia is the kind of place that beckons one to stop and enjoy. So peaceful and beautiful it is hard to leave. Of course, the hospitality offered there is not to be outdone by the other offerings.

I took quite a few pictures while there and will be sharing some of them here in this post and other posts to follow in this thread. I hope you enjoy them and that they will give you some sense of the beauty and enjoyment we witnessed and received while there.

Once again, Thank you both for a wonderful day!

To start things off with the pic's, I'll incorporate a few from around the home. Like I said, more will be coming later as I have time to put them up. I would like to add I tried my hand with some macro shots of the many beautiful flowers found there, primarilly because I have been inspired by Leo with his beautiful macro shots recently seen in the Photo Forum. Mine do not compare to his, but fortunately, the flowers speak for themselves.

The deer racks you see are only a portion of the many Vernon has taken over the years.

Thank Al for sharing the pictures with us.

I enjoyed seeing them and am glad you were able to visit Mr. Vernon. Even thought I only meet him once at one of the cookouts I have always been amazed with his knowledge of the outdoors. I only wish I knew half of what he knows and I'd be happy.

Thanks again for sharing your visit.

One of the pic's that got left out

I for one really liked this one. One of the reels is an old Pflugger, not sure about the other one.

Vernon Holt

Gone But Not Forgotten
The Visit

I can indeed confirm that I was blessed with a visit by Al33 and Missing Ridge this week. It was certainly an uplifting experience for yours truly. It was 'ol timers day at the Holt homestead. It was a time for yarn sharing, and wouldn't you know I had to endure some stories about how tough them "pesky South Bartow critters" are to deal with.

Thanks guys for making the drive to N. Ga. and for making my day.

A special note to all Woody's-GON Firesiders. I would be pleased to have a visit from any and all of you any time you find yourself in this area. The latchstring is always out.

Thanks again to Al and Butch for the special time together.

Branchminnow: My place is about two miles west of the River Hill Road. I know a couple of families that live on the road, but none live near the old washed out bridge.

The old baskets in the photo are made from white oak splits.

Phil: The flower you asked about is a Bearded Iris.

Mr. Vernon, did you make those nice white oak baskets? If so, would you be willin` to make a trade for one of them? I believe I can make you something that you would really like in exchange for one. I`ve been lookin` for one of those for my pre 1840 gear.

Vernon Holt

Gone But Not Forgotten
The Visit

Nicodemus: You have touched me in a tender spot. I have had the baskets for many years and am attached to them. Have always loved handcrafted basked from White Oak Splits. It is a shame that the craft is lost or nearly so.

Some thirty years ago while on a camping trip to N. Ga. I carried some tools and a Foxfire Book that outlined the finer points of making "splits" and how to convert them to baskets. My wife became the basket maker and I became the split maker. I will post a pic of our handiwork.

Please note that I didn't turn your offer down completely. I will reflect upon your offer and get back to you later.

Vernon
