Ever seen anything like this?

Popped a tough old boar on opening day of the first Ocmulgee big game hunt. Was out scouting a new area around 1pm. Wind was blowing hard, so I was slipping through some cattails full of fresh rooting. Heard some splashing nearby, looked up, and this nasty thing had his head buried in the mud at 15 yards. Popped him in between his ears with a .223 federal fusion out of an 18in AR. He dropped, but was still thrashing around, breathing heavy. Walked up and shot him again in the eye and he started thrashing harder and squeeling, so I finally pulled out my 9mm and shot him AGAIN in the head, and he finally went stiff and died.

This thing reeked and stunk like a dumpster, but I figured I would pull him out the woods and check him out anyway. Loaded him on my game cart and on closer inspection he had his scrotum ripped open at some point in the past and part of his testicles were hanging out, rotten, draining pus and stained from either mud, or rot. Pretty clear he was in poor health. Had a few sores around his body too, just little pink lesions with no fur.

Needless to say I left him in the woods. Went to the check station and told the DNR an estimated weight, and showed them the pictures, went home, and clorox wiped all my gear down.

Crazy that this pig was living like that, obviously for a while, and still took 3 head shots to finally kill.

I don’t see anything but a big ole pig that lost his bowels?

Pigs are very tough and a shot just a little off will make him thrash. Did you notice if that .223 passed through? I would think not since it’s such a big pig, but it’s hard to say. Regardless, CONGRATS on a super nice HOG! Hoping to get my first pig with my AR this year........Deer too?

Oh I meant to say to that he might’ve smelled like the dump because he’s probably been all through the dump that’s close.

It did pass through. Went in somewhere on his forehead and came out of his neck. I’ve had very reliable penetration with 62 grain fusions. I usually go for a head shot, but in the spring I shot a 100lb sow broadside through the body twice in the body with them and both rounds made nice penny sized exit holes.

I wonder if someone caught and tried to cut him, but he got loose before they could finish. Since they don't dangle, it seems like it would be really difficult for the hog to accidentally damage them.

What a waste of a bunch of pork... If he was alive and feeding then I think he was perfectly edible. Please don't kill pigs on public land and just leave them to rot. Let someone that will actually respect the animal and eat it take it out of the woods.

Any animal with an active abscess should not be consumed. He did exactly what he should have done.

Do you kill coyotes? What's the difference in a yote and a hog? I'm not talking about eating either..

No, but I have never seen a coyote while hunting. The difference is where it was killed. Do whatever you want on your on own private land. But many people, myself included , drive long distances to get to public land where we can have an opportunity to hunt hogs. Shooting and not utilizing an animal on public land is both disrespectful to the animal and other hunters.

That's your opinion....There's no difference where they are killed..Hogs are invasive species that cause millions of dollars in agricultural and environmental damage every year.

Based on the above, EVERY hog that a hunter sees, whether on public or private lands needs to be shot. If said hunter decides to leave the carcass laying that is their prerogative and what you think they should do matters not. Hogs are vermin!!

I can guarantee the DNR of every state that has hogs could care less where they are killed are what someone does with the carcass after the kill. I know of no state that list hogs as game animals..

But as with everything, to each their own...

If you would eat a hog or a deer that had an abscess wound you would be putting your own health at risk, I've seen processors refuse a deer because it had a past wound that was obviously infected and abscessed. Pretty sure most processors would do the same with a hog in the same condition, dispatching one and leaving it in the woods simply lets nature take its course, between the possums, coyotes, and buzzards there won't be anything left in a matter of days.

Trust me, I normally eat everything I shoot, and I don’t waste my time or an animals life if I don’t intend to use it. I didn’t bail on this pig until he was loaded on my game cart and closely inspected.

Was it really wasted? There’s a score of animals, insects, fungi, and bacteria with the sole purpose of consuming and breaking down carcasses. Something ate it, just not me, my wife, or my kids.

If you wanna try and eat sickly animals then I can always quarter and save the next one for you?

And dont worry, unless something extraordinary happens then there will be plenty of hogs down here, driving the deer and turkey numbers down, destroying the ground, and neighboring ag fields, and getting hit by cars.
