Dead Fish

Here in south FL, we have a canal that runs for miles, surrounded by agriculture. We've had tons of rain the past couple of weeks and have found a bunch of dead fish floating around. Everything from snook, carp, peacock bass, tilapia, even the mullet were floating around. This happened suddenly and am curious as to what you think it may have caused this?? This has never happened before in this area.

Florida waterways are being destroyed by stormwater runoff. They need sediment/perk ponds to filter the runoff prior to discharge.

Fish kills in Florida waters are , unfortunately, not rare.
I questioned a FWC biologist about it and she told me it was often due to fertilizer wash off causing an oxygen depletion.
Waters down stream of Golf courses or agriculture are prime candidates.
In salt water ”Red tide” algae blooms are often the culprit.

Rain has very little disolved O2. it could have possibly dropped the water from a healthy 6-7 ppm to say 3.5-4 ppm. I doubt the fertilizer had much to do with it. Just think what would happen if your O2 levels went from 21% in air to suddenly 13% in air.
