Indeed they were, lot's of them! I think of our soldiers in all wars, including those men and a few women when we were fighting one another back in the 1860's. That was horrific for us, regardless of the side we took!
Hard for me to imagine fighting in a war where the enemy could be my kin.

The battle of Midway always fascinated me. A very important battle in the Pacific. If the Japanese took Midway it would set them up to invade Pearl.

No doubt. The world owes that generation a debt that can never truly be repaid.

It's our duty to make sure their legacy never dies. :wink:

That pic reminds me of the battle of Tarawa, where very poor planning and poor recon caused many men to be cut down well short of the beach, when their landing craft became stuck on the reef due to low tide / low water levels. Many 100's of yards wading towards shore being raked by the nips machine guns and mortars.
