Lows and highs and it still is not over.

Spent 3 hrs at the emergency vet hospital in Fayettville Friday night. Was out at the local hunting preserve just checking on the guys when they said someone had a deer down and wanted to know if I would track, well of course I did. We get there and good sign so off we go. Hunters had tracked about 75 yards and lost blood. Baby worked the line well and took us beyond the their point of loss. Well it was very thick and I droped the leash and was walking behind her. Well she gets off in some really nasty stuff and I am walking down a mowed lane when I hear the deer start to move out in front of her. About that time I hear her start howling and barking and just really making noise. I figured she had it bayed. we get in there and she has her head turned sharpley around and is just standing there making noise. I figure I must have layed on the constant zap on the collar or it got stuck while we were crawling through stuff. I take it off and she comes up to me like why did you zap me. So we go back to the start and I tell her to find and she starts all the barking and wimpering again this time the collar is not on her. I took the tracking collar off to make sure nothing was poking her. That is when I noticed her eye was closed. I guess when she started after the deer. She poked a stick in her eye. It was already bloody and was very light sensitive. So off we rushed to the vet. The dyed her eye and gave her meds. She has a torn 3rd eye lid and a hole in the eye with bleeding internal. We will call the eye specialist Monday to see if we can get in on Tuesday. So for now we are putting drops and a cream in her eye every 5-6 hrs religously they said and giving an oral anitbiotic once a day. Yall pray that she does not loose sight in the eye. They were worried about the blood inside the eye.

Well met the hunter back out at the site of last nights feasco with the pup. Mirko has never been on a track 15 hrs old but he handled it like a champ. He worked the food plot and picked the line he wanted. Hetook us right across the same ground that Baby took us. He drug us through those same blasted briar patches that tore us up last night. We got to the point where Baby jumped the deer and where she got hurt. Mirko then picked a line and took us about 60 yards to a wound bed. It had very little blood and was cold. I was afraid the deer had got up and left on it own, this was just off a cut break. Mirko at first tried to take us across the cut into another thicket. He backed out and went around it and I followed. He decided that was not it and came back out without me. The guide and hunter were at the upper end of the cut area and were watching Mirko when I got there. Well all of a sudden he jumps back and is looking hard at something and I thought all right here it is. Ya it was there all right but very much alive we found out. When we steped up to look she took off to all our suprise we were not ready for that. Being so young and never been in this situation I was really expecting him to over run the lines, but boy was I wrong. First off there was only a few small drops of blood in the wound bed. Mirko went right after her and did a wounderful job of keeping us on track. The doe went about 300 yards and layed down in a privet thicket. When we got close she got up(could hear her but not see her). She crossed a creek and went up through some open hardwoods then into some thined open pines. This was good since I was tired of crawling through those thickets. We get up into the big woods and go a couple hundred yards and she jumps up. The hunter was shoting a something like a 45-40 (never heard of it) with open sights. It shot a little high at 100 yards but droped quickly after that. The doe jumped up about 100 yards in front of us and ran straight away giving him a hind end or head shot at a running deer, he missed. Off we go again and only go about 200-300 yards same thing doe jumps up he shoots and misses. Off we go again same thing again. By this time we are in some really big open pines and can see 400-500 yards so we have good vision. Well after the forth time of her getting up and the hunter missing we decided it was time for a change. The hunter was an older gentelman and the guide and I decided we needed a little more speed to try to close the distance to get a better shot. So we ask the hunter if he minded us going after the doe with his gun. He said yes and was going to give us the gun when he realized he had lost the rest of his bullets. So we sat there for about 45 minutes while the guide meet the owner of the place with some ammo and another rifle. So everthing is set we go after her expecting the same thing 200-300 yards and we will see her jump up in front of us. This time she held tight and we are all looking way out in front for her to jump up, she fooled us. Mirko and I were in the middle tracking with the guide on one side and the hunter on the other. The deer ended up holding tight till we got to within 20 yards then jumped up out of a small ditch. We were all looking so far out in front we did not see her. Well 2 shots 2 more misses. We get back after her and the guide cuts the line and goes to where she entered some young pines. As we get to him he says there she goes running. We send the hunter down the rd just incase she pops back out. The guide and I bale off into the thick stuff and Mirko now start showing us blood. Now that the deer is back in the woods and rubbing on stuff we are finding blood. For the last 1/2-3/4 mile we had seen only 2 drops, did not really need it since we could verify that the deer was in front of us. But Mirko could not see her due to the tall grass so he had to rely on his nose to get him there. We jumped her one more time in the pines but can not get a shot. We go about another 100 yards and I see her laying there on the ground like she had run her last. I tell the guide there she is and he starts to walk up to her. I told him better be ready just in case and you guessed it, she started to bolt. But this time we were close enough and was able to get a final shot on the deer. Over all track was about 1 1/2 miles, not bad for a 7 month all. I could not have been more proud of him. He is going to make the right person a great tracking dog.

I also lost my state pager on this track back in the thick stuff. Took the guide back there and we spread out and listened as the office paged me. Luckily I heard it and we were able to quickly find it. Ended up on a silt sand bar at the creek. It looked good when I went to jump down, but when I landed it was like quick sand. I was sinking to my knees and I guess with my struggling I knocked it out of my pockets. So what started ruff Friday night finished well.

Now for a speedy recovery for Baby. It is good that hunting season is about over as Baby is out for the rest of the year. But I have no doubt that if needed the pup could pick up her slack if needed.

I would say for fun. It is a side job and I do get a little money from the hunters . But I really like training my tracking dogs and seeing them work.

Hope she recovers. I know a one eyed dog that is just as good or better than one that can see perfect. Might even make her nose senses enhance.

We got a praise this moring. The eye vet said no surgery in fact the eye was
doing very well. The blood was gone from inside the eye. The pressure on the eye
was high but still in the normal range. The third eye lid had healed already and
the puncture hole was almost filled in. We do have some more meds to give her
over the next two weeks. He said with a puncture what happens sometimes is that
the puncture seeds an infection that pops up 5-7 days afterwards. So we are
taking no chances and have her and antibiotics already. But overall eye sight
will be fine barring an infection. Thanks for the prayers and well wishes.

Sir-

As an owner of a one-eyed beagle, I have to say I was pullin' for Baby but not too hopeful. I'm real pleased to read your good news!

Awesome story and that's great news on your dog. Man what a tough track on the doe though.

godogs they are Bavarian Mountain bloodhounds. They are not true blood hounds but that is the best translation of Bayerische Gebirgsschweisshund. It is really something like blood dog so they said to just traslatate it to the bloodhound.
