Question for Veterans.

I am not a Veteran myself but when ever I see a Veteran I make it a point to thank them for their service.On a few occasions they ask if I'm a Vet and I normally respond with No sir but I am a PATRIOT. My question - is that a respectful response? If not what would you like. Thank you all for your service!!
