Raised bed

About to begin prepping my raised beds for spring!
Got to put out some mulch hay to begin to rot and go get some top soil pulled from the river. (I live near Blankenship sand company which dredges Etowah river for sand and piles the top soil up for anyone to get so long as they use a shovel.)
I hope to expand the gardening this year. We got two vacuum sealers now and the wife wants to help blanch and seal with me.
This years plans:
Okra, jalapenos, squash, zucchini, bell peppers, cayenne, tomatoes, and some kind of bean.
What's y'all spring plans for this year?

I’m thinking. Tractor bucket and we have several water oaks. Maybe blow them into the bucket. Or a tarp. Wrap up carry with the bucket. I put the pea hulls in it last year and harrowed in the garden remaining. Any soil building will help. It’s old sandy farm land used by folks before us for years and years.

Organic matter and cover crops until you get sick of doing it. Then do some more. With the temperature we have in the south the soil bacteria are active year around. When you add organic matter it breaks down and goes away quickly. While it’s there though it’s great. Keep it up and you’ll be garden Kang.

I did wheat last year as a cover then harrowed in that spring.

I’m gonna make my garben a lot bigger this year and add more bean types to go with the green beans and purple hulls, hopefully at least navy beans and pinters. Also will do three corn types, a sweet corn, truckers favorite for canning, and another variety to hopefully make my own cornmeal n grits with. That’s the change in what I’m gonna grow. I’ll still grow okry n green beans n zucchini as well.

I’m gonna try really hard to get better results with my maters n peppers. So far I have not been able to grow them very well.

I’m gonna buy a couple wheel hoes.

Aside from that I’m gonna also change the way I water it, instead of county water I’m gonna pump lake water. It will be a pain but my water bill will be less and I think I might get better results.

Fun stuff! I’m getting excited already tryna plan it all out.

Yes sir, that's why I use mulch hay! No spray on it.
Oh you mean like mulch graded hay? I thought mulch hay was just whatever sat around too long. Either way sounds like you know what to look for! Good luck with your gardens this year!

Yes, I get it at my local farm supply store. You can't get it at tractor supply, the depot, of Lowe's at least around here.
If you use it break the bale apart in the flakes that naturally fall apart. Don't spread it like your covering grass seed with straw. And water the crap out of it. It will start to turn dark on the bottoms side quickly and rot making great soil.

Turnips thickly planted make an excellent cheap cover crop as well.

I got collards to workin' in mine. They are still a few weeks away from eatin' size but I can wait. There's just something about a poke chop, black eyed peas and collards with hot chow chow on a cold winter eve that can't be beat.
