Sad priorities

Consumerism has a firm hand on some young folks at my job.
We have one guy who drives to work in a 50k+ car, wears $500 Jordan sneakers, door dashes, drinks Remy and has a family.
The wife came up to the job once with her nails did, expensive clothes and purse.

He needed a ride home from work and one of the employees gave him a ride. Turns out they are living in a daily motel.

I remember my first apartment, no cable, frozen burritos and driving a starter truck they sold without bumpers new.

I don’t care what people do, but us older folks will probably be asked to help fund the problems of housing cost and general cost of living for people who are spoiled.

Maybe not to that extreme but I think each generation of young people spend money on things they shouldn't if they have other bills to pay.
In my day it was cars, roach coaches, alcohol, drugs, record albums, eating out, cigarettes, clothes, concerts, etc.
Now it's tattoos and vape juice Ray-Bans, Yeti coolers, Costa's, Blackstone's, Traeger's, Rangers, etc.
I mean if one can afford all that stuff, fine but I know some that have fancy grills and smokers that can't hardly pay the rent. But they can get a tattoo about every other month and a new phone once a year.
And when I say young, even guys and gals in their 30's and 40's.

That’s true. Stuff like concerts and baseball games have become a thing of the rich, but regular people still drop $5k on a ticket.

Most modern folks live far above their means. In all income brackets. They talk themselves into believing that they need this thing, or deserve to have that thing. Wasnt that long ago folks were glad when they got a new fork and a chair to sit on while they ate supper in a one room house.

I think that's true. Now that I'm older I think of all the useless stuff that I bought that we hardly ever used. But at the time we thought we just had to have it. And a lot of that was bought on credit.
And now I see my grown kids doing the same thing we did. I've talked to them about it like my parents talked to me about it. But I reckon we all have to live and learn the hard way.

We all did it. I don’t remember it being so important that we would live in a motel to drive the 1980’s IROC Z and have Season tickets to the Falcons with a wife and child.

I was broke and knew it. Consumerism has a hold on the poor folks who can’t afford housing.

Yep-Been there for sure. Probably had nearly $40-$50k into my show truck when I wasn’t even 21.
Trying to be a big shot I guess-Add my thick figaro and gucci link necklace’s-I was showing out-Impressing errrbody that didn’t give a care!
Ended up selling it to my buddy that did the body drop on it a few years back for $1500 to get it out of my garage-I paid him more than that to to the body drop and airbag setup, lol!
Completely foolish, but fortunately I learned earlier in life due to those decisions and going to money boot camp with my aunt & uncle when I moved to GA-Now I have a serious problem paying anywhere near $20k for a vehicle-and had to increase my mindset to that with the recent automobile climate. Used to be $10-$15k was the ceiling. Only pay cash and have had Zero consumer debt for around 7-8yrs now and a plan to have the house paid off within the next 5-7 yrs.
Just want something reliable that gets me to where I’m going and looks respectable!

For some reason, my friends still accept me though-It’s the darndest thing!

Consumerism=no eyes for the future. Lotta folks live for the right now and the look at me. You may not make it to old man status, but then again you might, best to have a little put back.
I make a decent living and carry no debt, but dadgum if life isn’t expensive even not keeping up with the Jones’s.
