Seed bank question

May be a silly question but after hearing people talk about a seed bank, how does it exist in the ground? What keeps it from germinating once it gets wet like all the other seed we plant? Why does tilling or plowing the ground activate the seed?

When we have the timber companies come in to cut, we battle sicklepod for years. It just lays dormant until the right conditions appear.

I cleared off some land that was a mix of privet and thick woods. Orchard grass started comin up. This hasnt been pasture for a looooooong time.

Depending on the time of year when you disturb that seed bank will determine what kicks up out of it. No way to know what you have until you turn it up. Lots of those native plants are better than the fancy deer mix seed bags you can over pay for.

Some how deer, turkeys and other critters manage to survive in areas without food plots. Must be something nutritious in that natural seed bank.
I have one so called food plot that will not grow what I seed but other native plants thrive. Critters graze it regularly on a par with my good plots.
Go figure......
