Canoeing in Macon on the Ocmulgee

Has anyone on here canoed the Water Works Park to Spring Street stretch of the Ocmulgee in Macon?

I drove down there yesterday and the canoe ramp and parking area has been completed. The problem is, the gate closes at 5:30.

How long does it take to do a nice leisurely float down, so I know what time to get started?
