DNR installs new archery ranges, upgrades shooting ranges

THE OPENING OF THE WILDLIFE RESOURCES CONSERVATION CENTER ARCHERY RANGES and SHOOTING RANGE ADDITIONS:
ACCESS FOR ARCHERS

With the opening of archery season just around the corner, Georgia bow hunters are tuning up their bows, fletching their arrows and practicing their hunting shots. If you or your bow hunting friends need new gear, and who doesn't need more hunting gear, you have two opportunities to see the newest, latest and greatest tools of the trade. The 25th Annual Buckaramas will provide the opportunity to purchase gear in Atlanta, August 2nd-5th and in Perry, August 17th-19th.

If you want a new place to practice, take your family or introduce a friend to your bow hunting tradition, Georgia bow hunters have several new state managed ranges being made available for you to use.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) has announced it is opening the Wildlife Resources Conservation Center (WRCC) archery range - one of the many new WRD archery and shooting ranges opening across Georgia this summer. The additional practice ranges offer members of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) and outdoor enthusiasts alike, new and improved opportunities to perfect their shot. The WRD deserves the credit for its efforts in promoting and implementing our statewide Archery in Schools Program. Of all the youth programs in the nations, Archery in Schools has great potential to recruit young people into outdoor activities which include hunting.

"With the addition of three archery ranges across the state, it is our hope that archers will now have more convenient locations to practice. In addition, we hope to encourage the public to come and learn how fun the sport can be. This is a family activity that everyone can do while enjoying the outdoors," says WRD Shooting Sports Coordinator Jen Bailey.

The WRCC, located in Social Circle (Walton County), is the first location to receive a static archery range. The range will include a variety of 3-D targets, including a 6-ft. moose, pink panther, velociraptor, deer and grizzly bear. In addition, the range will feature bull's-eye and broadhead targets and a backstop to allow for easy arrow retrieval. Archers will be able to shoot at distances of 10, 20 and 30 yards. A picnic area completes the family-friendly range, which is available to the public seven days a week during daylight hours.

Just across the street from the WRCC in Social Circle, the WRD headquarters office is adding a 20-station 3-D field archery range behind the office. This range will feature targets at varying distances along a walking trail where archers will have to judge the target distance while making their shot. Once complete, this range will also be available for use seven days a week during daylight hours.

Chickasawhatchee Wildlife Management Area (WMA), located near Albany (Dougherty County), also plans to break ground in July on both a new static archery range and a new 20-station 3-D archery range.

In addition to archery ranges, WRD is making significant improvements to several shooting ranges across the state. Redlands WMA, located in Greensboro (Greene County), is in the planning process and will be under construction in the next several months in an effort to improve range safety and create a more user-friendly range.

Construction has already begun on Wilson Shoals WMA, located in Alto (Banks County). A new office is being constructed to accompany the 75-yard shooting range, and the appointment of an on-site range safety officer is expected in the near future.

Cedar Creek WMA, located near Monticello (Jasper County), also has a shooting range currently under construction that should re-open soon.
Located near Albany (Dougherty County), Chickasawhatchee WMA plans to break ground after July on a new 200-yard shooting range.

Good News and then ...

The Social Circle site info says "will", meaning in the future. When's the completion date. Convenient to some early season scouting, to the east.

The Wilson Shoals rifle range always seemed a "Rube Goldberg" engineering marvel. "If we put it in the right location, maybe we could have avoided all this subsequent engineering work"? Maybe they can get the range down to 50 meters? Maybe they can make it a long range archery range for the PSE X Force shooters?

I was there at the opening of the range last Friday at the WRD office. It's very nice, very close, and very CLOSE!! Jen did a nice job with a good group of kids for most of the morning, introducing them to archery and explaining the NASP program. Dan Forster said a few words, then took the ceremonial opening shot and even hit the target with the kid's bow! I was there again today to let my 12 yr old daughter shoot her new bow. She is brand new to archery, and from 10yds, out of 10 shots, 5 10's, and then 5 out of 6 14's! And she was trying to shoot the 14, it wasn't accidental! If I ain't careful, she will be outshooting me!! The range is a nice break from shooting the block in the yard, and it will be really nice when the 3D range is open! Also met a super nice guy there, jeremy007 here on the forum, he was also letting his two young sons have a go at it!! Nice to meet you Jeremy, and can't wait to hear a report from your Ohio farm this season!!
