I was told by the guy with me this fella was in the 200+ pound range but how do you judge in the field? Any age/size related features to look for?

A lot of people will look at that bear and say it would go 400 lbs. I would be surprised if it goes 200. Probably less than that. 200 lbs is a pretty good sized bear. The ears are the quickest way to tell. Big ears = small bear. Small ears = big bear. That ones ears are still kinda big.

As said, ears.
Leg length. Long legs, small bear. It's not that the legs are shorter, just so much body mass and belly it makes legs appear that way.
Head size relative to neck. Big head, big bear, but the big males will seem like they have no neck, just shoulders and big head.
Eye size and spacing. Eyes will look beady and close together on a big bear.

Doug B uses the same criteria we do in terms of the ears. For me better yet the bear has to be huge. I'm not after regular bears any more. Like big bucks when you don't have to ponder if it is a shooter or not. But for typical bear hunters the ears is the best way to tell.
