OK, got the bushes out now planning a porch. I have wiggled through a few decks and attached ledgers to concrete and wood but not flagstone. The front of the house is rapped in 2" to 3" thick Tennesee flagstone. Do I need to cut area out to expose the (band joist) if that's what it's called?

Most of the time rock work only covers the foundation and then your skirt board or siding would start to cover the band.

My friend who is a mason says if it was his house he would build free standing but if you don’t then you can leave the stone but make double sure when you bore through that you’re bolting to the joist.

Free standing for the win. That’s the way we have to build them when there’s brick or stone on a new house.
