Making a Propane Fire Bowl

Has anyone ever made a “fire bowl” that goes on a half of a whiskey barrel? My plan is to make a propane burner that fits in a custom round hole on the top of a halved whiskey barrel. My daughter and son-in-law have a brand new patio made from pavers. I want to make them a custom whiskey barrel fire pit. Anyone ever done this?

Just design it so there's a reasonable air gap between the metal and the wood. Bottom of a fire pit/bowl gets really hot.

Could you incorporate some of the ceramic fiber blanket insulation between the two to help reduce heat transference?
