Shooting Range on wma

Just bought a new rifle the first for me in probably 20 years. So, I need to sight it in. I live probably 20 minutes from the range located on John's mtn. WMA. The last time I went to the range it cost $5 dollars. I have no problem paying the fee. At the time you put the money in the envelope at the range and used the range. Now I find out you have to down load a app on to your cell phone and pay on your phone. I don't have a cell phone. Believe it or not everyone don't have cell phones . So, even though I have a lifetime license to hunt I guess I can't use the range. It just seems like another way to push older hunters out. I think they should have both options pay with cash or use the phone app. What are your thoughts ?

I thought the ranges were free. I guess I was wrong.
Charlie Elliot, last time I was there, was free except the shotgun stuff.
I would drive over there and talk to someone there. If the app is really the case maybe they can help you out, wink wink.

It's run by the Feds and they have pretty much gone to all electronic payments for parking or other user fees. Somehow they still can't put quota applications online for National Wildlife Refuges.

Call the Chatsworth ranger station. They sell annual passes there, they may allow you to pay for a daily visit.

I go to Johns mtn and they have always had a “pay with envelope” kiosk, like your typical boat ramp. They added bathrooms and it’s pretty nice, but just rifle and pistol setups.

I had a lot of experience with those cash pay boxes in federal areas and they were a pain to manage. Break-ins, vandalism, counting money, accounting, going to the bank, audits. It was a real pain to manage. The app for payment solves all those problems and makes collecting payment safer and much...much easier to manage. The John's Mountain WMA is where the Chestnut Mountain Range is located. You can go on-line with your home computer or a friend's and purchase a daily or yearly pass at this site. https://www.recreation.gov/activitypass/9b26cdb8-77c3-11eb-85f2-9a53ea04ed79

I was just at John’s Mountain/Chestnut Range this week. There is no pay box any longer. The cell phone service is sketchy at best, it’s recommended to use their app to pay. I did not do the online app as I have an annual pass. Passes are half price for veterans, available at the ranger office. I’d pay the fee prior to going due to the cell phone service issue.

How you gonna call for help if/when you need it when your in the woods?
You know its funny to think about it now, but before lets say the early 2000s ish nobody had a way to call anybody from the woods mostly. Cept specialty stuff. So for all of human history save twenty three years we couldnt call people from the woods.

I recently went on a bonus hunt and they were telling people to use the app to sign in. No/poor signal at the check station. I saw people signing in on the back of the paper wma map.

Thanks for the heads up! I haven’t been in a while but need to.

are all the dnr ranges charging the fee now?
The John's Mtn. Chestnut Mtn. range is on federal property (Chattahoochee National Forest). Thus the fee. The DNR range that I go to (Wilson Shoals) is state property and only requires a hunting/fishing license.

Your info line doesn't say where you are from but I go to Charlie Elliott/Clybel a LOT. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a week, although it won't be that much during winter cold weather/deer season.

If you need to know something about shooting there, I can probably help you.

There is someone at the RANGE check station, which IS NOT the same as the Charlie Elliott/Clybel check station during hours of operation. The range is closed on Mondays.

That number is: 770 788 4023
