I went back to the place I hunted opening weekend in hopes of sealing the deal on the big bird that hung up. I knew the farmer moved cattle on the place earlier in the week so the birds' pattern could've changed. I sat down in the dark in my usual place near the roost and didn't hear a peep come daylight. Cows were all in the pasture where the birds normally fly down and had been stomping around the spring under their roost. Not even a hen was roosting in their normal spot. I got up and crossed a fence where the cows didn't have access to the other side of the property. I would stop every now and then, hitting a series of yelps on a Lonnie Mabry aluminum. As I was nearing the next pasture, one struck. I hit another series and he answered again. I could see them about 200 yards out in the fog. It was the big bird I encountered opening morning with a single hen. Two more subordinate gobblers were 50 yards to their right and they were all coming to me, in a hurry. I dropped behind a tree and got ready. They stopped around 100 yards out and a few purrs got them back in gear. When the strutter reached 30 yards I had a good opening for a shot and took it. One of the subordinates, which happed to have a double beard, just hung around watching everything unfold. I couldn't have asked for a better GA season.

Had one get to about 80 yards Monday morning but wouldn’t come any closer and had to get to work and couldn’t wait him out. Hope to try again this weekend.
