I don't own a set but have friends that swear by Brown products. I pulled a set once and they are very heavy duty..a little too much so for my 40hp .

Brown's are certainly nice, & command a fine price as well.
Athens' Harrows are heavy & well made. Taylorways are good. So are Hardee's (if you can find one). Leinbach makes one that is wonderfully adjustable, using a big screw handle instead of fighting it into position to drop a pin through a hole. Landpride has some good heavy ones too. (25 & 35 series). I've used most of those, they all do an excellent job.

You can pull an 8 foot, maybe a 10 foot with that size tractor. If you have an open hydraulic port, you have the option of using a pull type or an offset. If not, you'll need to stick with 3ph types. If yours is not 4WD, an offset may be more than you want to pull. Look for one with heavy box beam construction, weight is important (heavy is better), scalloped discs cut better than smooth, but don't leave as smooth of a finished surface. Combo's work well, notched front gangs, smooth rear ones. Offsets (& pull types) will break ground better, but may be harder to get a smooth seedbed with, take up more trailer space & require more turning room, if you have small plots.

Another consideration is width: it needs to be wide enough to wipe out your tracks, but wider than 8 feet will make you a road hazard & require wide load warnings every time you transport it. (I try never to get anything wider than 8 feet, whether I can pull it or not, for that reason).

Re: Disk horrow recommendation

If you're mainly going to use it for deer food plots, you might want to consider buying a 6ft rototiller instead. I bought mine about 5 years ago and haven't used my harrow since.

I bought a Leinbach about 7 years ago and have been very happy with it.
Love my 20 disc Lienbeck. I love being able to adjust it for either tearing up the ground or lightly covering seed.

Thanks for all the input. This will help me out alot in choosing a good harrow, and thanks Forest Grump for the detailed answer and website info.

1960's IHC Model 37, 8 foot, pull type. If you have the room in your plots, a pull type, like others have mentioned has some advantages.

We have a few sets of Brown and then some other sets for different sized tractors and the Browns are the best I've ever used.

Called them today. Out of business , but hoping to have some harrows out by spring. I was told by someone that the owner had health problems, but I don't know that for sure.

Brown Double Disc, 20 inch disc, I have one and a Taylor way, both are heavy but Taylor way is single row not double. Boss Bros. Country store In Loganville is where I got my Brown and they still have 1 six foot double disc for sale. You will be impressed with it.

I have a 6 ft. Taylorway that has double gangs on front and back. You can adjust front and back to make it as aggresive as you need. We have a 7 ft. Brown at work and I would put the Brown 2nd on my list if I could get a Taylorway. Frame is not near as durable as the Taylorway.
