And So It Begins

Man, we loved that you came up to see us!

No, it is not the Taj Mahal but it is cozy and that family treats us like kin folks.

Yes, the adult beverages were flowing then and they will be if you visit 2024!!!

If u think two Boyd’s are a hoot, if you can time it right next year at the overlap, you can get 3 for the price of 2… but my older brother is sedate compared to us.

I love the broccoli and asparagus - Ronnie not so much. He will tell ya it turns folks gay but you know that already!!!

Love your thread and your updates. Make me remember the Midwest all the better!!!!!
Share this with Ron. First engage him in a conversation about Chinese food. Make sure he mentions liking soy sauce. Then remind him if it's on the internet it must be true.

I'd be honored to meet a 3rd Boyd brother.
I will remember to pray for what you two referred to as the toughest Boyd. Should have already but to be honest I forgot until now.

Please keep the updates coming on the Ravin.

Nevermore.

Take care my brother.

Sorry my friend. Certainly didn't keep the thread going. Just being hopeful. Love to read a good story.

BTW got a few pics of him late season.

Get em. And maybe a LFTT session if you're feelin it.

Got in one last hunt before season ended. As usual I procrastinated about adding it to the story. For those that like to skip to the end of the book and see how it turned out instead of reading through, I was once again unsuccessful on dragging out a Midwestern buck. I was however successful on an enjoyable, if somewhat frigid, trip. Left Ga early on January 11.

Got there in time for a few hour evening hunt but all the rain had made one of the roads impassable without creating ruts. Luckily the other is on higher ground.

Parked and since the wind wasn't right for the stands on that side of the farm I pulled a camera and with xbow in hand just eased down a treeline and field edge. Now my stealthy days are long over but I still managed to sneak up on a few squirrels. As I was walking I got a call from @Jim Boyd. He knew I was hunting alone and as a good friend was concerned about me. Didn't thank you for that so I will now. Thanks brother Jim. Now my stealthy days are long over but I did manage to sneak up on a few squirrels and had a few nice views. Creek was up from the rain but temps were comfortable. That will change.

Wouldn't be me if I wasn't wearing a Ga hat.

Got checked into the motel. Pay no attention to that man in the reflection. Think it may have been a ghost. 20240111_193408.jpg

Got my coffee maker primed up for the morning so it just needs to be plugged up. Bought a full sized coffee maker to take with me last year. Tomorrow is another day.

Tip for hunting Midwest. Some motels offer a discount for hunters. Don't be afraid to ask.

Next morning I hit the little store for breakfast and on to the farm.
20240112_061144.jpg
The farmer had put down fertilizer, anhydrous ammonia, and it makes furrows. With the rain it created a lot of mud across the field. Had planned to hunt a blind as the forecast was for rain. Had a blind set up since November but it was on the back side of the field. Took the 4 wheeler as I could drive on the edge of the impassable road. Crossed the field with no issues other than the mud being picked up by the tires and then being thrown onto everything even though I crossed at a slow speed. My binos are still muddy.20240112_071605.jpg

Ditched the 4 wheeler and hiked the rest of the way.

The blind was gone. Guessing the wind as it was on the edge of a field edge. Staked down but those winds across open fields are strong sometimes. Made do.

Luckily the rain was light and the fog didn't get bad.

No deer were seen but I still had a nice morning.

Still a few pods with beans left in them.

And trails are easier to pick out this time of year.

Never know what you'll see. Out of respect for the deceased and their family I marked out the names in the pic.

Went out to the truck and ate lunch. Decided to hunt a stand looking into a flat at the base of an oak ridge. On the way back in I jumped 3 does. They would turn out to be the only ones I saw on the farm.Temps were dropping and when the water drops on the ladder froze I climbed down and hunted from the ground the rest of the evening.

Still had one cup of warm coffee though.

By the time i headed back to the truck the wind was picking up and it was getting cold. Riding the 4 wheeler back to the truck down the asphalt county road running flat out because i was thinking about warming back up in the truck my face started to ache from the cold. I put my gloved hand over my face to shield it only to realize I had cuckleburrs stuck to them. The combo of cold and being stabbed was not pleasant. Got loaded up and found the gate to the trailer was frozen to the ground. What had been mud was now a brick. Had to break it loose.Pic I took the next day. I chipped it off before heading home on Sunday.

In my haste to get in the truck I laid a trail cam and Pop's thermos on the truck bed cover and forgot them. Luckily found both next morning.

Trail cam looks unharmed but is actually trashed.

Stopped at little store again for supper. 20240112_175555.jpg

Next morning breakfast. That little store gets most of my money when I'm there.20240113_062428.jpg
Set up a ground blind back in the same spot as the previous evening since it would be out of the wind and the wind was definitely howling.Temp was in the single digits. Had snowed a little overnight and was spitting snow all morning. 20240113_073428.jpg
The little heater was nice but eventually the wind shifted and most of the heat went out the window.20240113_074500.jpg
Still had my coffee and second breakfast.
