I want to build my first Ar style deer slayer. I really want to build a 450 bushmaster for myself and a 5.6 or 6.5 for my daughter. Can anyone give me some advice on the best brands to use and the cost? Any useful knowledge on building these would be greatly appreciated!

Palmetto State Armory for good stuff cheap. Near the FN plant in SC.
MAS Defense

Fat Boy, Fulton Armory for receivers and lower parts kits. The $50 mil spec receiver works for me. Its the only thing that has to go to a FFL, so buy locally if you can.

Magpul for grip and MBUS Magpul Backup sights

I bought a LRB mil spec lower during Firearmageddon and paid way too much. Works Good, Lasts a long time.
VLTOR Key hole rails

I got the 9" discontinued CASV-KM last fall, but its only avail in green now.

I recently built one with an upper in 7.62x39 from PSA. Looking to take it into the woods for the first time this weekend. Ammo isn't expensive and it has a great reputation for putting down hogs and deer.

I have killed a few with mine, it's a perfect woods rifle. I've been liking the Hornady steel-cased ammo with the SST bullets. Pretty accurate in mine, fairly cheap, and performs good on deer.

Rock River Arms has a good single stage trigger, the contact areas are machined as opposed to just being left alone the way they are cast. Not expensive either, I have one in my .300blk and it breaks clean and crisp.

I have a slightly stoned RR 2 stage in one of mine...hard for me to tell the difference between it and the SSA in another one blindfolded

I'll have to try and find some of that. I've got some Prvi Partisan 123grn SP that I've been shooting. I'm really looking forward to giving it a try on some meat.

If it were me(currently building another AR) I'd look at these brands.

Upper/lower - Aero Precision. You can also get a builders kit like I did, comes with upper, lower and handguard.
Barrel - Bear creek arsenal makes good, but not overly expensive barrels
Trigger - Velocity. I'm running them in most of my rifles now, and compared to the other popular drop ins, they are just as good if not better and cheaper. I do have a Rock river arms two stage match in my rock river rifle, wont be replacing that one.
Bolt carrier - rock river nickle boron, assuming they make one for whatever caliber you choose, but don't skimp out here, spend a little money on a nicer setup.

All other parts are up to you. You can spend a lot of money, or save some. You can get a standard mil spec lower parts kit for your detents, springs, ect ect. Mil spec buffer tube, spring and buffer. Butt stock is up to you as well.
