Good Old .243!

In 1981 I bought my first real deer rifle from Oshman's Sporting Goods at Southlake Mall. It was a Ruger 77R in .243!

I ordered a Leupold Vari X III 1.5X5 for it and killed my very first deer that season with it. It was a big,old 8 point I killed on a freezing cold, windy December day from a stand nailed between three trees. It was the biggest buck killed that year and I got a free membership the next year which was about $65.
This was my primary rifle for 20 years and I killed a lot of deer with it using handloaded Hornady 100gr Spire Point bullets. 90% of the deer never took more than a few steps and most went down in their tracks. Never had one go out of sight with neck or high shoulder hit.

Around 1999I got bored with rifle hunting and bought a T/C Contender in 7-30 Waters. Between it and a few more handguns I did not use a rifle for the next 20 years during gun season unless it was something different. I killed deer with an M-14, a British Lee Enfield and a very old Remington 740 someone gave to me.

This year I decided to hunt with a Winchester 94 in .32 Win Spl from the 1940's that my Dad gave me about 50 years ago and I never killed a deer with it. I had some close calls but no deer yet. I am limited with my old eyes.
Then I saw the old Ruger in the back of the safe, stock has 10,000 dents from climbing trees. I ordered a new stock from Boyd's just to dress it up and sighted it in. A few inches low and left and soon it was dead on.
First night I dropped a doe at about 70 yards, bang flop. Next time I went out I shot a doe at 82 yards in a field bang, flop. Neither took a step.

You just can't beat a well placed shot with any rifle but I have enjoyed reunited with this old Ruger.
Remainder of the season I am going to use the Ruger or the Winchester depending on where I am hunting and would like one more deer in the freezer for more jerky!

Rem. In .243 is the only rifle I have ever used for deer, with Hornaday loads. Most kills are like you say, bang - flop. Light weight shortish barrel hard to get any better in my opinion.

I too killed my first few deer with a .243. I “upgraded” by purchasing a model 94 .30-30 from the mother of a deranged drug addict as a teenager. From there I’ve had half a dozen rifles I’ve shuffled through as my go to, but if I was smart I’d have stuck with the .243 and just been proficient with it. Nice story!

Years ago I used a 30-06 but a .243 is what I hunt with now. My sons used .243 & 6 mm. Bang, flop, no tracking. Seeing was believing. At 70 the .243 is a little more gentle on the shoulder.

243's are good deer rifles. I have killed several with mine and seen truck loads my friends have killed with theirs.

Dad bought me my first deer rifle for my 13th birthday, a Remington .243 Model Seven Youth. A little over a month later, I killed my very first deer with it. A nice 8-pointer from public land. Dropped him with one well placed shot to the neck. I have other guns, but I still primarily hunt with this little rifle. I've hunted with it for so long, and know it's limitations, I rarely hunt with any of the others. Plus, it's so lightweight and compact, which makes it very easy to carry on those long walks. I've killed nearly all of my deer with it, including some very large hogs. And most everything I've shot with it, has dropped dead right there. I only use Remington Core-Lokt Ammo. It's a mighty fine shooting gun, I love mine.

Southlake,Northlake most of Metro Atlanta is a wasteland!

Didn't use to be that way. My wife and I use to go to the movies and eat dinner in places I would not go now with an armed escort!
Southlake mall used to be nice but that has changed. I have not been in it in 10 years and don't plan on going!

I like it! Glad you saw it in the back of the safe

It amazes me, on various outdoor forums, that archery is heralded as sportsmanship, but for some reason the .243 is scoffed upon by so many as "not enough". It really does baffle me. I have theories, but I can't articulate those here.

That is goofy. A bad shot with either will result in an injured deer

Killed my first deer with a Ruger Compact .243 with a tang safety and red butt pad. Still have it. Love that gun. Anything 6mm is my favorite. Just something about it. Been using an AR in 6mm ARC this year and extremely happy with it.

The guides I hunt w/ in Montana, say a .243 is good for Muley's & Elk, but they are better shots than the average person.

Southlake is bad.. but heck.. Lenox Mall has had 7 Shootings inside this year..ALL of ATLANTA is about ruined & unsafe!

They want to try to fix the problems now but the biggest thing is the courts. They release individuals with gun related charges on cash bonds and even felons in possession of a firearm are treated lightly so they are all carrying guns, ready to shoot and not worried about the law!
