Ideas on what to plant

Just picked up a new lease and plan on doing some planting next month (about mid-late September). But looking for some ideas on what to put out there since this will be my first time taking lead on something like this. The soil is pretty sandy, so not the best in the world. What are some different types that I should focus on putting out? Thanks in advance for the help!

Get a soil test done first and tell them you're going to plant cereal grains and clovers, then they can tell you how much lime (you need to get down right now) and an estimate on fertilizer.

Then you can chose from some of these basic mixes, as a starting point. Others will have good suggestions too, for sandier soils.

If you have any deer at all they will just be stems.

Like IHunt says, if/when the deer get a taste for soybeans, unless you have 5+ acres, (or fence them off) they will put a hurt on them. If you're planning to have some for a bow plot, then plant them a couple weeks before bow opener and cross your fingers for rain.

Soybeans aren't really a year round crop, although they do provide some good nutrition, if you have lots of food plot acreage. Deer need carbohydrates and protein, at different times of the year and it is different for gender and age.

So, if you work on getting your plots "right" to plant a "mix" of things, you can get "closer" to a year round plot, that provides what a deer needs. If you focus on what a fawn needs, that gives them a great start in life, to maximize their potential.

And, with soybeans, if they get nipped off, below the first 2 leaves, they are dead. Cowpeas, on the other hand will just keep trying to grow.

Don't know bout that time of year but so far here they love the okra. Been wearing it out a while now. May try a couple rows just to see how they like it & if it will grow then

Winter wheat mixed with clover will give you the best bang for your buck. The stuff will germinate on concrete and grow anywhere. And the deer like it. Once you get your ph right you can explore more options.

Don't feel like you have to spend a ton of money on seed. Lime and fert are more important than name brand seed.
