There are only three sources of good, edible cooking fat in our area that I know of. Bear, hogs, and ducks. Groundhogs and coons, too, but it wouldn't taste like Crisco. Deer tallow is not very good for cooking. You can make oil from walnuts and hickory nuts, but it's not easy or productive.

We would all have to get rid of our notions about what tastes good. That would also thin the herd. Taste and texture will chase a lot of people off

I think yall would be suprized at just how quickly the population shrank if it all fell apart all of a sudden. The real truth is that empires crumble over hundreds of years. It wont be sudden most likely.

Doing good, starting 3rd week of PT... the stretching of the scar tissue will wake you up in the morning.

Here is another point to consider for all those worried about these roving gangs of bad actors that are gonna pop up and scour the countryside. Have you ever stopped to consider that a very good many, maybe even a majority, of these type folks are heavy drug users. That most of them are on the modern drug of choice, which seems to be opioids of some form or another. You ever seen anybody going through extreme opioid withdrawl? They aint gon be doin much of nothing.

Man I been in the swamp for the last 3-4 days. I ain’t reading 229 posts, so I mite be repeating somebody else’s same notion. I believe the point to the song is that country folk (real ones) are used to making do with less and doing without. They learn to live off the land to a certain extent and know how to think outside the box. Gardens, gathering and livestock.They do for themselves, take care of their family and neighbors. Them folks most always have some of the same tools to get by with.
As for Hank Jr, he was the man when I went to high school. That song was our Prom song. I went to see him in concert at the Memorial field house, absolutely the very worst concert I’ve ever seen. He was drunk as a polecat, ran all his songs together into one melody and staggered off the stage. Loved his songs back then, today he seems he done went koo koo trying to be hip.

Then imagine if you encourage and help your neighbors to do the same and so on. Then imagine hard times do come and you and everybody around you still have food to eat. What if most folks did that? Not much to worry bout then huh?

We want zombies and bug out bags and places to bug out to and all that exciting stuff like in the movies. What fun is it to just survive by being a farmer and starting a community of people? If we can't be the road warrior like Mel Gibson in an apocalyptic wasteland, it almost isn't worth the trouble...

I agree, but I will say that having a shotgun, a rifle, and a 4WD and knowing how to skin a buck and run a trotline will probably put you a lot further down the road to survival than having a smartphone, a wifi, and an electric smart car; and knowing how to make a latte and run a TikTok channel.

Heck, just being able to skin a buck will put you ahead of seemingly 3/4 of the hunters nowadays.

i got shotgun,rifle,no 4wheel drive,,,i can skina buck,doe,knot head,catfish,hog,goat,etc...grow good old tomatos,squash,peas,butterbeans,etc....i know how to make lard and likker,,,i can cure tobacco,,,,i aint got no friends in new york,,,,,i go to church.....dont like crowds,,,,oh yeah i can make wine too....

With no 4wd though, none of the rest matters…You got no chance at all
