If he was hunting bear, why didn't he shoot the bear as it approached him?
Why didn't he fire the weapon as it was attacking him to see if it would run the bear off?

If you've ever been bluff charged, you realize that a bear can be on you in the blink of an eye before you can even get the gun up. And given that I had two different bears slip within 10 yards of me in the last week without me even knowing, I can easily see how this could have happened!

Without a doubt. You realize quickly how fast they are and the limited options you'd have in the event one decides to come for you. Even when they scent you and clear out of the area, you can't help but appreciate their speed.
