I have a small section of a garage shingle roof that tends to grow stuff on it. I use a product called Wet and Forget that kills it. Hasn’t harmed the roof at all.
If it’s a newer roof, it shouldn’t be growing on there. Most newer shingles have at least a 10 year algae resistance. The algae will compromise the shingle, making it brittle and result in a much shorter lifespan of your roofing system. Depending on how old, I’d contact whoever installed your roof and see if it’s covered under warranty. Depending if you used a reputable company or not, it should be and let them fight it out with manufacturer. Again, all of this depends on if you use a reputable company. Most suppliers/manufactures will make it right when a problem arises from a company who spends a few million a year on their product. If you decide to use a chemical, be sure to do your homework. Most of the “safe” chemicals that won’t hurt your roof, void your warranty and also alter the long term lifespan of your roofing system.
I got a buddy that cleans roofs. He came done mine a few months ago. Matter of fact...I still owe him for the job ! He is on here occa4. Jigman29....I think he goes by ! Anyways... Appalachian Soft Wash. You can look him up. I will send ya his number if ya want to talk with him about your problem.
It’s gleocapsamagma, that grows on the northernmost slopes of our roofs. It can be treated and made to look new. It’s not a shingle color defect. Anyone from jefferson to Stone Mountain that needs it done let me know my guy is great. As a roof contractor I wouldn’t let just anyone do it.
