My 5th summer garden: Expansion and more beans

My little okra is finally coming up planted 4/17. Left it in the dried pods all winter in the barn. Went straight from the pod to the dirt. Only had one shower on it after planting and just enough to get the ground wet this morning.

First rows of butterbeans planted 4/16 have popped up pretty good. Peas and green beans planted around the same time have not. This is the reverse of my usual problems. I planted a few more rows of butterbeans a few days later and they are also doing pretty good.

Trimmed the lower stuff off of the tomatoes and got them tied up in case it gets windy this weekend. Hossinators are still filling out better than marglobe. Cherokee purples are in cages. just starting to get a few blooms.

Yellow squash and zucchini have little ones and should be ready to get a few in the next week. Plants looked too tiny when they first put on blooms, but they have grown like crazy in the past week.

Cucumbers all have blooms and are starting to climb.

Pumpkins and cantaloupe are blooming. Watermelons starting to take off.

Stowell's evergreen planted 4/6 is about ready for the first dose of nitrogen, but I replanted some skips last Wed. I would have got about the same feet of row I had planted last year without planting the skips, but can't stand to leave empty dirt. I have several rows using traditional fertilizer and the other half I'm using some organic chicken products as an experiment. At this point, just a few inches tall I can't tell any difference.

My little spot is jumping, all except the brussel sprouts that is. I knew it was way too late to plant them, but tried anyway. Bugs are tearing them up.
Most every farmer in my area have pivots running in their fresh planted fields, we’re do for a shower.

Got my garden laid out finally. Got 5 rows of silver queen and 3 rows of okry planted as well. Plan on finishing up this afternoon. Have 40 mater and about 20 pepper plants to get in the ground. Also have squash and zucchini, beans and cucumber seeds to plant by the cattle panels. Going to try and grow the squash and zucchini vertical this year. Think it will be a total failure but going to try. 9731B078-B40C-4194-BA70-E13712D3A39C.jpeg

Man U always have a fantastic garden! Post pics as it grows please. Im Gonna use cattle panels for my beans this year, it’ll be a lot more expensive but I think more convenient in the end.

What does it mean to plant vertically?

For space purposes this year I’m gonna put my maters and peppers at the end of all my rows. Should make it easier to work around them with the tractor and tiller. Is there anything that might make that not work? Certain plants not like growing next to each other?

Thanks! I'll post pics as it starts growing.

Planting vertical is when you "train" the plant to grow up instead of out like normal. You have to tie the main stem to a post as it grows. This helps keep the vine borers off and gives more airflow around the plant which helps with controlling powdery mildew.

Good to know. This is the best part of these threads for me, always learning. If it works out for you Ill poach the idea myself next year :bounce:

Well, thank you Jesus, I have most of my garden in the ground now. I have around 50 tomato plants, and 30 different pepper plants, that gave been in the ground for a couple of weeks. Tonight I put in 3 rows of Mountain 1/2 runners, 2 kinds of cucumbers, crook neck squash, zucchini, and around 6 hills of cantaloupes.

I still have to get my sweet corn planted, but I haven't gotten that field plowed yet. My rows are ready for the okry, but I usually plant it in mid May, after the soil warms up a lot more.

it got plumb dark on me before I could get out of the garden tonight. I will get some pictures in the next couple of days. I put down 3 rows of plastic mulch for my 'maters, peppers, squash, and such. I need to put wood chips in between the rows to keep the weeds down.

My 'maters have doubled in size this week. They were about 3 inches out of the ground, now they are over a foot tall. I will have to start staking them this weekend

I have heard of plastic mulch but don't know anything about it?

I'm still fooling with cleaning raised beds, turning the dirt and adding soil amendments. I did manage to get my peppers in the ground. Holding off on the maters. I been watching BigBend's biochar thread so I bought some from Lowes. Just one problem. FedEx has lost two of the bags and they were supposed to go in the mater beds. I should have started earlier but I got wrapped around the axle with turkey season.

Also got about 2.5 acres of soybeans planted after work today. I know that ain’t good fer doves but I been planting corn in that dirt for several years n figgered it needed a break. I’ll plant some sunflowers where I can to try n get some birds in.
