Orienteering

As an assistant scoutmaster, yea, there are still plenty of orienteering courses in GA. There’s a GA orienteering club and they host races from beginner on up. Highly organized and easy for anyone to plug in. We participate in a few to teach scouts map and compass.

Ha! Ha! Also look for moss growing mainly on the north side of trees. But that does not mean a few trees. Only if the moss is on the same side of hundreds of nearby trees.

And only if it is a wide relatively flat area. Trees growing on the sides of steeper hills might vary due to the natural shading of the hill.

Dude. Great advise. Just look for the bent trunk and it will lead the way.
I guess you might be joking on that, so I apologize in advance if so.

I will estimate that the total lifetime I have spent in the woods would rank far less than the bottom 1% of most folks on this forum. But I can safely say that any single time I have sat for longer than 30 minutes in one spot I have spotted at least 5 to 10 such bent trees in various directions.

But hey, I do know how to find the North Star if it is not a cloudy night... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

That is, if I can find my way out of the woods to a clearing where I can see the stars. :ROFLMAO:

Skip the daytime and go right to night, never have an issue.

Terrain association is pretty useful as well, especially if your compass screws up, been there.

Resection works well also to find your location from two known points if you have a map and straight edge, helps greatly to have a compass.

If you are a scout swimmer you are orienteering underwater - currents affect your fin countView attachment 1249038
Uphill, downhill, brush, snow all impacts it, Panama was the worst.

One of the companies decided it would be a good idea to do night landnav on Empire Range, we spent the next day and a half finding them

Moving in Panama jungle at night… is using the braille method with black palm. Not fun at all.

And kuna grass, your back azimuth looks like a dog leg 200 meters from the truck on a 6 klick march
