Spring Fling 2018 has come and gone for me and my group of friends and after trying our hand at BIG WATER last year at Lake Guntersville we decided to take our show back to a small water venue as that really does serve our group best and this year we held our fling at Hamburg State Park and this place was wonderful. The fishing was “decent” and just like always the weather played a major factor in the fishing but all in all it was another great fling.
The lake is 225 acres so it’s big enough to hold a group of our size there and it has some stories of some BIG BASS being caught there so we we’re hoping to hook up with a few of them…….the only problem was a spring time cold front that came in and dropped the water temps from the low 60’s to 49 degrees. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again……..we could plan our fishing trip on the lake of fire and a cold front would roll in on us and mess up the fishing but oh well……..what are you going to do, we can’t control the weather. The lake looks bassy pretty much everywhere, there is a ton of stumps and logs and standing timber and shallow water and deep water and great shoreline cover and a couple of us went down there a month ago when it was warm as all get out in Feb. and we caught fish right off the bat so I thought we would hammer the bass, and we probably would have if it wasn’t for that dang cold front!!!!!
The camping at Hamburg is top notch and you have hot showers and nice clean restrooms and the camp spots overlook the lake and you can pull your boat right up to your site so that was a nice feature so I can’t say enough good things about Hamburg State Park and their staff there. Mrs. Julie runs the place and she was very helpful leading up to the event and answering my 2,700 different questions. She even came down and had a steak dinner with us on Banquet night.
To the fishing………….it was slow. It did improve as the week went on but it was still slow going. Johnny Awesome caught a 4 lb. 10 oz. largemouth on a spinnerbait on the first day but other than that most the fish we’re caught off plastics moving them very slow. We fooled a few bass with some flukes. There was ZERO topwater activity going on. The lake has a bunch of pickerel or what some people call Jack-fish and we caught a bunch of them. They may have been spawning and up in the shallows and they may have run the bass off but one Pickerel that was caught was full of eggs as she dumped rowe all in the boat and all over my shoes…….so that was nice. Ole Buck made a hard push at that 4 lb. 10 oz. bass and caught one that weighed 4 lb. 5 oz. but that Johnny Awesome fish from Day 1 held for all 3-days and he came away with the Spring Fling Trophy this year. He’s a first time winner so that was nice.
This was our 16th Spring fling and the fact that we can still get together like this is pretty special. As we get older this trip seems to mean more and more to us. We eat good…..we laugh and tell stories…we kick the logs around the fire and we fish our tails off for 3-straight days in the hopes of catching the biggest bass there. It was another great Spring Fling and I think we’ll go back there next year……just maybe later in the Spring so that another dang cold front won’t come in and mess up our fishing world……..but if one does come in…….we’ll make the best of it, like we always do!!!!
Hope you enjoy the pics and I have some gopro footage too that I’ll be working on to put together a nice little video of Spring Fling 2018. Stand by for that………
Tight lines everybody
