Turnip Greens, Cornbread and Billy Joel's Greatest Hits!

Tim “Cool Dad” Gill and I pulled in almost exactly 12 hours after we left the Captain’s Quarter’s this morning. We had driven maybe 115 miles or so and I can assure you that it was distance and time well spent.

Our first goal this morning was to meet some friends at Salacoa Creek Park in Ranger, Georgia for a day of Carpin, Bank Talk , and general relaxation.

When we arrived, Barry Shildneck, John Torchick and Lance Clements were already set up and ready to go. In fact, they had the Bank Talk well underway long before we even arrived…..

We have all fished here before. We know from experience that the lake holds lots of smaller Carp but very few big ones. Although it also holds a good number of Mirror Carp, none were brought to hand today.

There were probably 10 or so Carp caught today but for my $$ the fish were not the highlight of the day. The first highlight was a surprise visit from Greg Collins.

51 year old Greg played ball for me when he was 13-14 years of age at Turner Middle School in Lithia Springs, Ga. He came by to surprise me and for a couple of hours we caught up on old times. I haven't seen Greg in many, many years and I was humbled to have him take time to come by. It really can’t get much better than that…….or can it?

We had arbitrarily chosen 6:00 PM as a cut off time so soon thereafter we were loaded up and ready to head home. Since it was time for dinner (or supper as we say here in the south) Cool Dad and I stopped by Wes Man’s family restaurant in White, Ga on the way home. As the Father of Cool enjoyed a hamburger, the Ol Captain sank his teeth into some beans, Turnip Greens and Cornbread. Before long we were on the road again driving the 50 miles or so back to the Captain’s Quarters. As Max and Cool Dad quietly settled down for the ride the Ol Captain popped in his newly acquired Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits CD and something almost magical happened!

Over the course of the next hour or so and even with Burgers, Fries and Turnip Greens under our belt a transformation began to occur. Max’s tail began to wag and Cool Dad began to sing. I found myself keeping rhythm by tapping on the steering wheel and even though I had just experienced some of the finest fried cornbread I had ever put in my mouth I found myself as well as my Crew in “a New York state of mind.” It was indeed a day well spent but that’s the way the music usually plays out when you go Carpin with the Captain. When you get a chance, come see us!
