Hurricane overreactions.

When dealing with such a large storm with so many people in it’s path, I reckon it’s better to play it safe than be sorry. What if they’d of said it was no big deal and it turned out to be so? It still may be for some of us. I won’t be mad at all if this turns out to be a lot weaker for my area than they first predicted.

I’m sure folks in Cedar Key, Keaton Beach, and Steinhatchee don’t think it’s an overreaction. The fact it stayed offshore further south in the high population areas was a pure blessing.
Horseshoe beach was under water this morning.

My clover plot got a little rain and it needed it. We in SWGA. Not much to it here. Thank goodness.
Amen, brother! Hopefully everything will be good your way.

Yep, you never know how these things are going to go. That one that came over middle Georgia a few years back knocked our power our for 3 days. My brother in law in Bradenton had the eye pass right over his house and he was without power for 2 hours. How's that for luck!

The videos out of Seahag Marina in Steinahatchee show major flooding, but next to no wind damage. Boats are still sitting safely in the dry stacks, tables and barstools are still on the porch, etc. Compare that to the damage at the marina when a Michael (an actual Cat 4) came through PSJ - not only were boats blown off the dry stacks, the dry stacks were blown over. Not only were tables blown off the porches, the porches (and the building it was attached to) were gone.

For the individuals who own property in that area, yes it's devastating - no one wants to have to deal with the aftermath of flooding, but that doesn't change the fact that it wasn't a Cat 3-4 storm when it landed, and never was.

When NOAA's data recorders don't match the data being published for the same point in time, it's entirely fair to say that it was overblown.

I’m not sure if it was exaggerated or not, but there are a couple trees and my power pole laying in the yard that say the wind was still pretty strong way up here in Thomas county.

The "overreaction" might be a response to the official exaggeration.

For instance: At about 7:00 am this morning Idalia crossed the coast almost on top of an automated NOAA weather data recording station. The NOAA/National Hurricane Center (NHC) proclaimed that Idalia was a Category 3 "Major hurricane" (sustained winds of 96-112 knots) at the time. Their OWN weather station, right there where the storm came ashore, recorded MAXIMUM sustained winds for that period of 53 knots (tropical storm strength, below the minimum of 64 knots to be classified as a hurricane). The NOAA station is KTNF1, Keaton Beach, FL.

About an hour before landfall NHC had classed the storm as a Category 4 Major Hurricane (sustained winds 113 to 136 knots). In the immediate area of the eyewall was another NOAA Weather Buoy (NOAA station 42036). That buoy recorded maximum sustained winds under 50 knots and a maximum gust of 60.3 knots over the past 24 hours.

If you are in the path of a hurricane that is officially STILL a hurricane FOUR hours after it crossed over onto land, you might want to close shop too! On the other hand, if the storm is causing a lot of rain and winds up to 35 miles an hour (like reported by NOAA station VAT in Valdosta, GA with the storm right there), maybe you would remain open!

Do I need to buy a bigger tinfoil hat?

Hopefully overreacting, as it’s suppose to get windy at 2pm and the 10 yr olds have been released with their golf carts by the parents around here.
