Mercury Outboard water pump help

My 4 hp motor has a small key to keep the impeller in place, problem is that it also fits into the drive shalf. I can't seem to keep key in place and install new impeller. Anyone know what the trick is with these things. All other impellers I have install over years didn't present this problem.

Would a little dab of grease or something similar hold it in place well enough to install it?

it may I have used that in automotive situations but I got the feeling that there is a trick to it known by motor repair techs.

Is this a new pin or an old one. Sometimes the old pins get worn out and won't stay in place while trying to install the impeller. Worst case, use a tiny drop of super glue.
