I was gifted a handful of October beans this past January. I plan to get them in the ground tomorrow.

Im fixin to show how little I know, but, what are October beans?

Ur heirloom corn seed was gonna get planted today but the ground was a muddy mess. Hopefully tomorrow or the day after.

Pretty sure I saw his twins being shot at Don Carter last year. Better reinforce that fence before October!

I planted/replanted everything yesterday besides one row of peas and one row of beans. Our germination was pretty poor on butter beans, beans, and peas the first time so I sowed pretty heavy. We’re getting some rain today, but nothing like they called for. I need to get the drip tape laid out so I can put some water to it

Yea, at Don Carter I may have been guilty of letting my inner Billy shine through :bounce:

As far as planting goes, I was waiting till this cold snap passed. Looks like we got a few weeks of warm weather behind it. Not much rain the the forecast but I’m hopeful. I’m gonna plant as much as I can in the next few days n hope we get some decent results.

They`re new to me. One of my reenactor friends gave them to me and see how I would like them. She said they are really good. Big flat hulled beans that are light cream colored with red streaks running across them. I`m hoping they do well. If so I`ll save some seed for the future.

Good deal. Look forward to hearing how they work out.

I am still searching for the best tasting corn to make cornmeal. I planted Prolific last year, and while it is lots better than any you can buy off the shelf at the store, It isn't what I am looking for either. Anybody got any to suggest? Something I can get my hands on, please

I’m gonna try n make some outta what I grow this year. But it leads to a question, how the heck does anybody make “buttermilk” cornmeal? Home grown cornbread is very very high on the “to do” list this year.

That corn I sent you makes the finest cornmeal and grits. As for buttermilk cornbread, just use buttermilk instead of sweet milk when you mix your batter.

Blue Clarage does well in our area. Its pretty good corn. Ive been stickin with Hickory King the last few years just cuz its traditional to this area and i like the idea of that. For heirloom sweet corn "Buhl" has done the best for me. The Sand Hill preservation center in the midwest has been carrying the stock foward for many years now.

I planted Bloody Butcher last year and it’s very good. That Jimmy Red you see advertised was developed from BB. I’m trying Nicodemus’s family corn this time it’s a beautiful white Dent type. I’ll post after I get some ground, I don’t expect disappointment.

I would love to get my hands on some good heritage corn to use. My granny use to have some she really liked. Dad says it was called Mulberry or something like that.
