Poults

I was driving down a county road in Paulding county today and saw a hen squatting on the side of the road. I slowed down and she walked off dragging her wing and I saw this pile of poults. Doesn’t look like as many as there was. As soon as I snapped the pic they got up and went towards the woods and momma and there was for sure at least 12, possibly 15. You can see the hen in the wood line in pic. Dark spot. I took the pic from my truck window, it’s just zoomed way in. Hopefully some of them evade all the numerous creatures looking to eat them IMG_3375.jpeg

We’ve had a 10” rain and a 3” (that came in 2 hours) down here. My prayers are with the poults. I hope most of them were in the shell for the 10.

Shoulder of the county road, but there is a field that looks similar a few hundred yards from her. Maybe someone’s chickens nearby are keeping the hawks occupied.

If it's close to Sheffield, she has 13. I seen her yesterday with them also. As I was watching them, a hawk flew over and the hen jumped up and flew after the hawk to chase it away. I've never seen anything like that. Very awesome to witness. The poults laid motionless until she came back over to them and escorted them further into the woods away from the road.

That’s likely her then.

I was out planting today and saw several mothers with new poults. All brand new. Warmed my heart!

I wanted pics, but resisted the urge to slow down and just trucked on by.

I knew where one of the hens was nesting so it was especially rewarding to see her at least be this successful!
