Not even close, many folks got introduced to salmon through government commodities during the depression and recession of the 50s. Salmon, rice, cheese and peanut butter were the staples handed out. Kept many folks from starving. My mom prepared salmon patties. As I traveled beyond the south I learned to ask for sammin.

Never did in my part of the country but we did eat salmon from large cans. We didn’t grow rice but folks learned to cook it.
