I mostly heard them called wardrobes, and occasionally a chiffarobe. For some reason, most of the older houses didn't have closets at all.
I've still got one that my grandpa built out of wormy chestnut. I've got it in my kitchen, I added shelves in it, and use it as a pantry.

Closets was high dollah back in the day. Most folks probably didnt have enough stuff to really ever worry bout it. Fast foward to modern times and we got companies that design and install custom closets to maximize stuff layout. Then we go storage rental places on top of that.
