WRD To Reveal 10-Year Deer Plan
How should we best manage our deer? Hunters urged to attend one of eight public hearings.

Wonder what the plan will be to set deer limits, doe days, season dates and address the different regs for different parts of the state? Speak now, or forever hold your peace... at least when it comes to the quality of your deer hunting in Georgia for the next 10 years.

The Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) has announced eight public hearings where we learn the plan to manage Georgia’s deer for the next 10 years. What the plan entails is still not available for public review, but GON is requesting the info so it can be made available online here at www.gon.com before the meetings. These public hearings are the last opportunity for public comment.

In announcing the public-hearing dates and locations, WRD said, “How many white-tailed deer should we have in Georgia? The answer to this question varies depending on whom you ask. Management of Georgia’s white-tailed deer herd can be a challenging and, at times, controversial topic.

“Georgia’s Deer Management Plan 2015-2024 will guide deer management in Georgia for the next decade. This plan is being developed through the best available science and a comprehensive public-input effort including public meetings and hearings, web-submitted comments, scientific surveys and stakeholder meetings. These public hearings represent the final phase of the public-input process and your last opportunity to review and comment on the draft plan.”

If you’ve been concerned during the previous 10-year management plan and want to have a voice on the plan for the next 10 years, please attend one of these important public hearings.

I've attended several of these meetings in the past and even spoke at some. I've also submitted my comments through their website many times. Even if you do not plan to speak, listening to what everyone (hunters) have to say can be very interesting. At least sometimes.

Guess I'll have to submit my thoughts through e-mail. The Monroe meeting is closest to me, but 4:00 a.m. Tuesday morning would get on me way too quickly to make it feasible.

When you attend-they will present their agenda-they will allow you to speak-they will nod usually politely-they will complete the tour and implement their agenda. The first seems like an hour of the last one I went to was a sales pitch on the department in general having nothing to do with the meat of the session. It is interesting to hear some of the wide variety of thinking that comes up....but it is for "Show" and is done because it is required as part of the process. Lot's of Game Wardens standing in the back of the room and a lot of DNR trucks we are paying to be on the road are in the parking lot-when you see these you will know you are at the meeting location !
