A fly fishing trip to Wyoming!

My brother has promised to take me on a fly fishing trip to Wyoming, my choice of stream! I know that he has been to the Miracle Mile. I am not as experienced or as good a fly fisherman as him. Any suggestions? I was thinking the Green River.

You really can't go wrong in Wyoming. I suppose you're looking at a float trip?

I am leaving on a month long trip at the end of August. I will hit Wyoming first then work my way into Idaho and Montana. I have a list of 3 streams from a guy that, if you catch the 3 species of cutthroat out of and send pics to the state they will give you a certificate for the cutthroat slam. Seems really cool and I hope to hit it while out there. Feel free to p.m. me if youd like the names.

Yes I was reading about that on line. I will mention it to my brother and see if it is do-able.

We completed our CuttSlam way back too, we did ours in about a week span, it did require catching 1 fish, grabbing a photo, then jumping in the truck to hit different trout water however. It is a great "excuse" to experience and see more of WY as you must fish different drainages. Search Tri-Basin Divide. A month fishing in WY.... envious for sure, safe travels.

I did the Cutt Slam in 1999 when it first started. This past September I caught three of the four in one day jumping basins. Its doable in one day but much more enjoyable over several days so you can enjoy each unique watershed at least half a day. I enjoy doing "slams" like that. Nevada, Utah, Arizona and California all have similar programs as well. Life Goal to hang all those on the wall one day so you can look at them when your to old to wade.

greater Yellowstone. Different water every day if you choose
You could conceivably fish big water (Yellowstone River) medium sized water (Lamar River) and smaller water (Soda Butte) all in one day and have less than an hour driving between them.

Too old to wade? Hush your keyboard.

I'd say visit Jackson WY for the Snake River and Teton views! Then venture north into Yellowstone. If your fly fishing is sub par, don't hesitate to throw a spinner or Rapala on spinning gear - if you are on a stretch of the river where it is legal. Mash down your barbs and have at it. Not sure who created the rule that trout fishing is fly fishing? Those big trout don't get big by slurping hatch insects. They will smash minnows ! I've caught a ton of big trout on spinning gear. All gently released.

I have fished the Snake from Jackson Lake all the way down to Idaho. Some great cutthroat fishing! Plenty of side rivers like the Hoback, Gros Ventre, Buffalo creek, and Flat Creek. Lots of shore access if you aren't floating. Check with West Bank Anglers - they will set you straight. Plenty to do in addition to fishing in Jackson! Probably the most beautiful areas in the US. Stunning is an understatement.

Hard to go wrong with the Green. But the Bighorn, Shoshone, Wind River and on and on ain't bad either.

Almost forgot. Don't overlook the high alpine lakes all over the region. My son works as a back country ranger/firefighter and trail crew leader in the Shoshone NF out of Lander Wy. We have made some overnight trips to some of the lakes. Lots of fish, cutts, brook trout, rainbows, browns, and in a rare few golden trout. Not many big fish but lots of fish in the 10-14" range.

The greatest trip I've ever taken was chasing goldens in the Wyoming high country.
